What is Pick of the
Litter?
Pick of the Litter is a non-profit corporation dedicated to
helping find homes for homeless and unwanted animals. We are
a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status organization. Donations are
tax deductible.
-
Who is Pick of the
Litter?
We are volunteers banded together in an effort to save
animals.
-
Why does Pick of the
Litter exist?
Every day, thousands of animals are discarded, cast away like
yesterday's trash. The dog your neighbors left behind when
they moved away; the feral cat who hangs around the neighborhood
mini-mart; the litter of puppies or kittens dumped on the side of
the road. These animals face almost certain death.
Sometimes loved pets become lost and their owners die, leaving
them homeless. Pick of the Litter helps find homes for these
animals. Many are ill, injured or starving when they come
into our possession. We provide medical care, and are a
resource for individuals who rescue stray animals.
-
How does Pick of the
Litter find homes?
An adoption fee of $100.00
for all animals is
charged and every animal is spayed or neutered! We try to
make the best matches possible in placing these animals into new
homes. In 2000, Pick of the Litter placed 247 homeless dogs
and cats.
-
Can we make a
difference?
You bet! You would be surprised at the results.
You can help save lives, turn cats and dogs, kittens and puppies
who have no hope into happy and healthy pets.
-
Why do you not adopt outside your local area?
We foster these animals in our own homes and they
mean as much to us as our own personal pets. Therefore, we like
to make a home visit prior to adoption. Because we are a small,
fairly young group, we do not have the contacts used by larger,
nationwide rescue groups to make home visits and transport animals
to their new homes.
-
What is your “local area”?
A 100 mile radius of Longview, Texas, including the
Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex.
-
Are there exceptions made to the local area
rule?
Yes. We make an exception to the local rule area
when the cat or dog is a senior citizen, has ongoing chronic
medical condition, disabilities or requires special handling.
-
Why do you not adopt to people who have
unspayed/unneutered animals?
8 million animals were euthanized in the United
States last year because they had no home. Almost all of the
animals who pass through POTL’s hands are homeless simply because
no one wanted them. The spay/neuter of all pets except those
owned by responsible, professional breeders would stop the killing
of homeless animals in shelters. We believe it is the responsible
thing to do -- furthermore, most of our animals are mixed-breed.
Oops litters are a major contributor to the thousands of animals
killed in Longview last year.
-
What is a responsible breeder?
Someone whose animals have excellent temperaments
and who represent the best of the breed, in physical appearance
and health. A responsible breeder already has most of his/her
puppies/kittens sold before a litter is born. A responsible
breeder does not have “Oops” litters or sell his puppies in
Wal-Mart parking lots or Canton.
